LD Systems D1020 Professional Dynamic Microphone.
It's interesting that while many of the bigger name established microphone manufacturers are falling over themselves to produce cheaper and cheaper products, some manufacturers, perhaps better known for their budget products, are moving upmarket into the mid-range price brackets. The D1020 may be a mid-priced dynamic microphone, but it's sound and overall performance place it amongst the very best dynamic stage mics around at any price. Quite a claim for a £69 mic. Feel free to pay us a visit to try one out. Or order one, and we'll ship it to you. If you don't agree with us, we'll be more than happy to take it back. But we don't think you'll be dissappointed. Describing the sound of the D1020, phrases such as 'full bodied' and 'warm' and 'smooth' spring instantly to mind. The large neodymium diaphragm offers extended bass response, but is also light enough to accurately reproduce higher frequencies and harmonics, with no 'nasaly' mid-range so often associated with stage microphones. The shell has a black matt 'soft-touch' coating to minimise reflection from stage lights. The capsule is suspended and isolated from the chassis to minimise handling noise and for shock-proofing and durability. It is equipped with a heavy duty switch making it great for D.J. and announcement type applications, but it can also be locked in the 'on' position for music and band applications.
We think you have to go quite a long way up the price scale to find a microphone that sounds anything like as good as this. Beyerdynamic's TGX60 and TGX80 alongside Audix's OM5 have always been amongst our favourite dynamic microphones and the D1020 can certainly be considered in the league of these esteemed products. The only real difference is the price. At £69 we think it's a much better option than Shure's SM58 (a rugged industry standard stalwart now really beginning to show it's age, at least sound-wise, although we accept for hire companies, etc the need to supply product requested by customers is paramount), AKG's D5, Beyer's TGX58 and Sennheiser's E840/E845. We have all the microphones for you to test alongside the D1020, give us a call if you'd like to cme and put one through it's paces.
